We continued the month of January with more winter fun! We had to be creative and make our own snow since the weather outside was unseasonably warm. We sang the "It's Snowing" song and had an indoor snowball fight with newspaper snowballs, built a garbage bag snowman and made play dough snowmen, snowflakes and snowballs. Friends wrote and illustrated a class book titled Winter Favorites, sharing their favorite activities during the winter. We created snowflakes of all kinds; baked cinnamon sugar tortilla snowflakes, handprint snowflakes and pipe cleaner stamped snowflakes. We practiced our scissor skills by cutting icicles, and finger ice-skated in white paint to practice our names and letter of the week.
We ended the month with our exploration of Polar Animals! We learned a little about the polar regions and what animals live there. We read some non-fiction books about polar animals and even did some sorting and classifying of different species of penguins! We discovered how animals can live in the arctic and antarctic's cold icy climate by testing the blubber hand experiment. We also tested and observed what happens when you put salt on ice. Kiddos designed polar bear masks, sponge painted penguins, made footprint penguins and built an igloo! We played in the arctic ocean sensory tub, painted icicles on the easel with droppers and pretended to be penguins by strapping on pillow bellies and balancing eggs on our feet. Friends practiced letter formation by tracing letters in play dough with straw pieces and tried out crayon rubbing with their hot glued name. We played the Feed the Penguin game for one-to-one correspondence and counting practice and friends loved the Shopping Day game Ms. Jess brought to school! We even made a edible penguin for snack and did some arctic animal yoga!
